What to expect with a business phone line over our broadband

  • It makes sense to use the same provider for your broadband and phone line, but here are a few pointers to help you get the best from our network:
  • You’ll need to keep your broadband router plugged in and switched on at all times to make and receive calls
  • Remember that any connected apparatus won’t work during a power or network outage
  • If you or any of your employees are considered vulnerable or you have vulnerable people in your care, you can speak to us directly and we’ll accommodate your needs
  • If you don’t have access to a mobile phone service and rely solely on the phone line to make calls to the emergency services, we can provide you with an appropriate solution
  • If you have an alarm, lift, healthcare monitor or point-of-sale device that relies on a phone line, or you’re thinking of buying apparatus that does, be sure to check with the device manufacturer to see if this service is suitable

IP Type

Dynamic IP

Dynamic IP (Internet Protocol) refers to an IP address that is assigned to a device or network dynamically by Virgin Media whenever a connection is established or when the IP lease period expires. It is in contrast to a static IP address, which remains constant for an extended period.

Dynamic IP addresses are commonly used by residential users, small businesses, and mobile devices that connect to the internet via Virgin Media's network. Here are a few key points about dynamic IP addresses:

  • Dynamic IP Address Assignment: When a device connects to the internet, Virgin Media assigns an available IP address from its pool of addresses. The IP lease period typically ranges from a few hours to several days.
  • User Case: A common user case for dynamic IP addresses is home internet connections. Virgin Media assigns a dynamic IP address to the router, which then distributes the connection to multiple devices within the network. As users connect and disconnect their devices, the IP addresses are dynamically allocated, allowing efficient use of the available IP pool.
  • Security: Dynamic IP addresses can provide a level of security through obscurity. Since the IP address changes periodically, it becomes more challenging for potential attackers to target a specific device or network.

It's important to note that dynamic IP addresses can present challenges for certain applications that rely on consistent IP connectivity. In such cases, static IP addresses are preferred to ensure uninterrupted access and reliable service

IP Type

Static IP

Static IP (Internet Protocol) refers to an IP address that remains fixed and does not change over time. Unlike dynamic IP addresses that are assigned by Virgin Media static IP addresses are manually configured for a device or network and remain constant.

Here are some key points about static IP addresses:

  • Fixed Address: A static IP address is manually assigned to a device or network and remains unchanged until it is manually reconfigured. It provides a consistent and permanent address for a particular device or service.
  • Reliable Connectivity: Static IP addresses are beneficial for applications that require a consistent and uninterrupted connection, such as hosting websites, servers, or remote access services. With a static IP, these services can be accessed reliably by users or clients.
  • User Case: One common user case for static IP addresses is web hosting. Websites or online applications hosted on servers with static IP addresses can be easily accessed using the same IP address, allowing users to reach the website reliably without the need to update their DNS records frequently.
  • Remote Access and VPNs: Static IP addresses are often used in scenarios where remote access to networks or Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) is required. By assigning a static IP to the network gateway or VPN server, authorised users can securely connect to the network or access resources remotely.
  • Networked Devices: Some network devices, such as printers, surveillance cameras, or IoT devices, benefit from having static IP addresses. It ensures consistent accessibility and simplifies configuration and management.

IP Type

Multiple Static IP

In some cases, organisations or businesses require multiple static IP addresses to accommodate various services or devices within their network. Here are a few points about multiple static IP addresses:

  • Service Segmentation: Multiple static IP addresses allow organisations to assign dedicated IP addresses to different services or devices, ensuring better segmentation and control over network traffic.
  • Load Balancing and Redundancy: Multiple static IP addresses can be utilised to distribute incoming network traffic across multiple servers or devices, improving performance and providing redundancy in case of hardware failures.
  • Hosting Multiple Services: Organisations hosting multiple websites, email servers, or other online services may require multiple static IP addresses to assign each service a unique IP for accessibility and management purposes.
  • Enhanced Security: By using multiple static IP addresses, organisations can isolate specific services or devices, implementing different security measures based on their requirements. This helps in protecting critical systems from potential threats.

Overall, static IP addresses, whether singular or multiple, offer stability, reliable connectivity, and flexibility for various applications and network setups that require consistent accessibility or customised network configurations.

Your Solution

About your speed

We estimate that at peak times the download speed to your Virgin Media Business Wifi router will range between {{availableDownloadSpeed}} and the normally available upload speed will be {{availableUploadSpeed}}. However, the actual speeds can vary and may be lower. This may be due to things like your use of WiFi, equipment, internal wiring or peak time congestion.

The minimum download speed to your router should not fall below 50% which is {{minimumDownloadSpeed}}. If this happens for three consecutive days or more, please contact us, and if we are unable to fix the problem within 30 days, you may be able to exit your contract without penalty. You can find out more by using the search function on our website and typing 'Ofcom Speed Codes' and we will also send this information to you via email.

Powered by our hybrid fibre connection

Our hybrid fibre network starts at our special sites around the UK before running to our street cabinets. (That’s why it’s sometimes called fibre to the cabinet, or FTTC.) There’s usually one of these a few hundred metres from you as the crow flies, or even less. Here, we convert light signals into high-frequency signals, which run on coaxial cables that support broadband speeds of more than a gigabit per second. These weave through our underground network, with one heading straight to your home. So, most of your broadband runs over a fibre link, while our coax cables finish the job.

Powered by our full fibre connection

Our full fibre network starts at our sites and runs to our street cabinets. It then powers straight through to your home, which is why it’s often known as fibre to the premises, or FTTP. The connection zips along – sometimes underground, sometimes across aerial poles, and through our street cabinets. When it reaches your home, a fibre optic cable will guide it in through a small hole – this’ll end on an outer wall or plug straight into our kit
